How to Make Freezer Apple Crisp Kits

We buy brownies and cake mix in a box, why not make our own apple crisp for a convenient dessert? We used our first apple crisp kit at the campground. The results were a hit. Now I’ve got to get to work and make some more kits for our next fall camping trip.

Here’s how to make your own freezer kit. Grab the apple-peeler-corer gizmo and start peeling a bunch of apples. It’s apple season, right?

I halve with a paring knife after I have a bunch peeled. Place about 6 to 8 cups of apple slices in a labeled gallon size bag. I add about 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in the bag and seal and then comes the fun part. SHAKE! Shake the lemon juice around to cover the apples. You may toss in a little sugar if  you’re using an apple that turns brown quickly or don’t let it bother you because they’re going to be cooked anyway.

Once I decide how many kits I’m making. I make the topping according to this recipe. I double or triple the topping ingredients according to my ratio of apples.

The topping is bagged separately in a labeled quart size bag. It helps to write the baking directions, which I did not do because I make this often. Refer to the topping recipe for complete instructions for your bag. This is an easier way to travel with an apple crisp. No dishes or aluminum pans to bend while traveling. It also serves as an ice pack for other cold items. I’m working on more apple crisp kits or at least frozen apples for future crisps, pies or applesauce.

Never let apples go to waste. Peel, core and slice the softer ones too, and get them in the freezer. You’ll be glad you did once apple season is over. Take a frozen bag to a neighbor, friend or co-worker. Surprise someone in need.

Awesome add in items for the crisp:

  • dried or fresh cranberries
  • cranraisins or raisins
  • walnuts or chopped pecans
  • real vanilla ice-cream
  • whipped topping
  • half-and-half
