I discovered this secret while I’ve been brainstorming a way to motivate my new Foods 1 and 2 students. I wanted something for them to do quickly and affordably and I’ve found it!

This is soooo easy and fun for kids to make in the microwave. I have 5 bags on hand for my high school students to make on Fridays. One batch requires an angel food cake mix and a regular cake mix and that’s all, my friends.

I chose chocolate cake mix for a chocolate version. The angel food cake lightens the chocolate flavor, but it can totally be added back with the toppings like mini chocolate chips or chocolate syrup.

I purchased vanilla funfetti icing which the students loved. It was a build a cake bar with various toppings for them to choose from. I’ll vary the toppings and cake mix from time to time as a Fun Friday.

Don’t you think this would work well with homeschool students or teaching your own kids simple directions with a yummy reward? I’m sold on this portion control idea for kids and adults. My mom is already making a batch for her and my dad for those non-cooking nights.

1 Minute Mug Cake Mix:

  • 1 cake mix, any variety
  • 1 angel food cake mix
  1. Label a gallon size bag: 3 tablespoons mix plus 2 tablespoons water. Stir to combine. Microwave on high for 1 minute.
  2. Combine the two mixes in a gallon size bag, seal well. Gently tumble the bag to combine the two cakes well.
  3. Store in refrigerator for long term use.

Suggested toppings:

  • mini chocolate chips
  • strawberry, chocolate or caramel syrup
  • fresh seasonal fruit {sliced strawberries are ideal right now}
  • whipped topping
  • sprinkles
  • ice cream or frozen yogurt {ideal during warmer weather}

How would you top your mug cake?
