I love sharing recipe ideas on the Internet. I came across a neat idea making pizza in the slow cooker from Crock Pot Girls. I took their idea and ran with it using my favorite whole foods recipes, like the Artisan 5-minute dough mixed in a plastic shoe box.
I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again, I can’t live without this easy whole foods dough. It’s quickly made in 5-minutes using this recipe in a plastic shoe box. I sit on the counter for 2 hours and easily stash it in the fridge until I’m ready to bake.
I typically have this dough made every week. If not, I’ve got a thawed baked item made from this dough on my counter and we’re devouring it.
I started placing about 3/4 inch dough amount into my sprayed crock pot.
Next, I spread as much homemade speedy pizza sauce as desired. Since I was striving for deep dish, I went a little heavy.
The fun toppings go on next, just like you would if you were oven baking it. Pile it on. Watch out for putting too many ingredients on the liquid side. For example, too many tomatoes could make it soggy. I like to deseed mine on pizza or slice very thinly.
Cover and cook on high for 2 and 1/2 hours, depending upon your crock pot size and whether yours shuts off automatically. Mine goes to warm setting after the timer goes off (which keeps cooking, in my opinion).
I was away for three and half hours and my crock pot heats well on high. My pizza turned out a little on the dark side, but it tasted great! I would recommend experimenting with the amount of time you cook it and hang out at home if you can to baby sit the last stage and take note on your recipe.
It surprisingly had a great thick crunchy crust and the cheese was melted throughly. I’m anxious to try out other toppings and experiment. This could easily be adapted to any favorite homemade or store bough crust. It’s great on an errand or church day when you’re going to be out a few hours and want dinner ready when you come home. Imagine smelling pizza when you walk in the door and your oven’s not on!
