April Mission Meal with 4-year-olds

Meet my four-year-old son’s best friend, Anna Grace Jarvis. She does nearly everything with him, including serving at the mission meal. Last month was Caleb’s first time “serving his customers” (so he quotes) and he wanted to share this experience with his best friend. Wearing too-big gloves makes it all the more exciting.

There’s just something about watching children serve. I know Jesus is smiling from above and seriously saying, “Well done my good and faithful children,” as they giggle, spill spinach on the floor and drop bite size strawberries.

Every woman who walked through the kitchen door was greeted by a child’s smile from ear to ear. Now who needs a meal to go with those smiles?

Our menu:

Most of the food is generously provided by Manna Food Band. The labor and love is provided by our organization, Mom on a Mission and two giddy four-year-olds.

Have you considered serving at a homeless shelter lately?

  1. I am always inspired by your blog, and I share your testimony often as an example of God meeting you where you are at, and giving you a way to minister no matter what season of life you are in. I think it’s wonderful that your son was able to participate. I tried to serve at a soup kitchen when my son was about 9 or 10 and they wouldn’t allow him to participate. They were afraid it would embarrass the children who come in. Our church has a ministry to Bowery rescue Mission in NYC to go in once a month for the day and run all the services, feed the homeless and go out on the streets and hand out food and supplies as well. He was homeschooled so he could take that day each month and he did it from the time he was 12 until he graduated high school. Real experiences are the best teachers.

    • Oh I agree, Cynthia, authentically real to those around us make a huge impact. Our children will always remember that. I hope your week is fantastic. Thanks for sharing about your church!
